Nowadays, our work becomes more dependent to the digital world. We all need digital skills to be competent for job, no matter which industry you are working in. Digital literacy is so important that pupils in the UK have to learning coding starting from the age of 5 until 16.

Managing Director of Hays in Asia, Christine Wright, said that ‘The digital revolution has touched the lives of virtually every consumer and business around the globe’. Definitely only very few companies still only cling to use office tool to perform tasks. Sales forecasts do not rely on sales reps’ intuition anymore but big data to make more precise analysis. Retails hardly survive if they do not appreciate the importance of digital marketing.

Digital literacy is no longer a ‘teens’ thing’. It does not matter whether you are the head of company or a small potato with no own room, you have to know something about the digital world. You may want to keep up with the business, to go ahead of the industry, or just to be considered by future employers, do it for your own good to equip yourself with IT skills. Given that technological advancement floods in everyday, it is obvious that only the one who is open to change will survive.

In 2016 the Hays Asia Salary Guide found out that around 30% of Hong Kong employees were thinking to leave the current job for a new chance. They were actively finding new job positions and even plan to switch job within the year. This is an alarming signal to employers and recruiters as more than a quarter of the workforce thought about a move. Here are some reasons for them to want new changes.

The surveyed employees disclosed salary or welfare was a major reason for them to seek new jobs. Employees expect annual rise in their salary which seems quite impossible to heads of company. With only 17% companies afforded a 6% pay rise, no wonder employees were so eager to explore new jobs.

Being pessimistic about their career future was also a driving factor for them to leave. When they see no chance of getting promoted within the company, it is likely that they will consider working for other employers.

To keep competitive employees on their positions, maybe it is time to care for their needs more. Work-life balance is a hot topic recently, which also states out the wish of many employees. Having time to get recharged is definitely beneficial to both workers and the company. Good performance is guaranteed when employees come back to office without stress or fatigue accumulated from previous days. Appropriate increase in salary is a considerable measure to drive employees work harder. They do not only obtain instant reward for their effort, but also a promising progression if they stay at the current workplace.

It is common for us to make mistakes. While some mistakes are tolerable in workplace, it is always better to avoid making one. Here are some mistakes that probably screw up your career.

1.Stay in your comfort zone
When you stay in the same position for a long time, it is easy for you to lose motivation to improve. You will probably forget the passion of learning new skills that you have on your first day of work. You should push yourself out of comfort zone and be eager again to taking up new challenges. By exploring your limit you may find more fun in work.

2.Lose vision to company’s goal
It is no surprise that most employees see their job and salary as the most important of all. However, one will easily lose the sense of belonging to the company and plan to leave. Understanding what your company aims at can anchor yourself in the company and develop stronger passion to the job.

3.Let personal and professional relation mix together
Overtime you naturally build friendship with colleagues. While it may be convenient to have friends in the same office, it may also give you larger burden. When you put yourself in a ‘friend vs work’ dilemma, you are about to leave your job desperately. So be sure to keep a clear boundary between relationships.

4.Lack self-confidence
This problem sometimes also happens on the seniors. In face of serious business issues one easily shows weakness and the need to depend on others. Without self-confidence wrong decisions appears. Think back to every successful decision you have made may rebuild confidence and provide reliable experience.

Happiness Start Up

Tips To Get a Better Job

So your job sucks. You could resign yourself to a life of dull (or even miserable) days in the office or you could set aside some time and get a better job. Here are some great tips to help you put together a great application, ace the interview, and ultimately work for a company you’ll love rather than hate.

  1.  Put Together a Resume That’s Actually Compelling
Creativity of your CV can set you apart and stand out from the pool. Online tools can be great help to equip your CV to be extraordinary. Visualize.me can create an attractive infographic. Sites like Re.vu andZerply help you create professional landing pages that can serve as digital resumes. About.me and Flavors.me can be tailored to do the same. Also, the right color and font would make your CV look nice. Putting effort on your CV to impress your target!
  2. Ensure Your Resume Isn’t Filled with Common Words and Redundant Phrasing
When writing your resume, you don’t want to use the sort of language that’ll make you sound like everyone else. Don’t overuse some terms like motivated, innovative, dynamic or detail oriented, excellent communication skills etc. Also, terms like “references available upon request” are implied statements, waste space, and do not need to be on your resume. Read your resume in detail to correct all errors.
  3. Search Unconventional and Career-Specific Job Sites
Instead of going the traditional route, try an unconventional job site like OneDayOneJob.com, which sends opportunities to your email inbox every day. SimplyHired is a seemingly standard job search, but it aggregates listings directly from company web sites and other locations so you’re not just pulling directly from one big pool. TweetMyJobs will handle the searching for you. Just tell it what kind of job you want and it’ll text, tweet, and email options to you as they’re discovered.
You can look on the company’s site for more suitable positions and apply for those. Conduct a web search for the type of job you’re looking for and the term “job search site” and you may find a tool that’s more focused on your specific needs.
  4. Find a Better Job by Searching for a Great Company Rather Than a Position
It is more important to get a job with satisfactory working condition than the position. While there may not be many offices like Google Inc. which provide recreational space and time for employees in Hong Kong, you should still look up for company that really cares for their staff. Once you find one you may try to befriend with some of the staff working in that company and ask for their experience. A sincere attitude will get you more information and a greater success in getting you into the ideal work place.
  5. Learn to Read Body Language for a More Successful Interview
While you may rehearse the script for interview many times, you may still miss the shot. One very important factor influencing the chance of landing a job and survival in office is body language. Whether you are an interviewee or a part of the company, negative gesture is always the thing you want to avoid doing. Shaking leg and grinding teeth definitely ruin your impression to the others. You also want to learn how to read others’ body language as it gives you hints on interacting with people.

While a remarkable CV sets employer’s first impression to you, your consistent reputation also significantly influences the chance of landing a job. Your reputation, also known as personal brand, significantly affects your success.

Personal reputation can be most easily built via social media. Nowadays, your online personal profile is easily accessible to many people including your potential employers and HR department staff. It has become a common practice for recruiters to go through your online profile before deciding to take you in. What you present on the social media hence becomes very crucial and should be consistent with the reputation you want others to see. For example, if you describe yourself as innovative and adventurous in interviews, then your facebook wall better not show anything negative or trite. Consistency is emphasized since you do not want recruiters to find out you are a hypocrite. You should also keep updating your personal profile with relevant activities you recently participated to show you are an active person.

When you apply for a new job, you should inform your former hirers and referees. Recruiters may contact with your previous company to get information of you. Therefore, you should always keep a good relationship with them and earn their respect. This implies that you should maintain a good working attitude in every job.

Last but not least, try to keep in touch with potential recruiters and people in the industry through different channels. Give congratulations to those who are on the rise in career. You will never know who will become your supervisor so stay alert and try to be tactful.

To impress potential employers, we better emphasize on previous work experiences and relevant skills. However, a fresh graduate may find it embarrassing that he or she has nothing to put into the resume except academic qualifications. If you are in such a situation, don’t panic because you still have a chance to write an impressive resume.

  1. Showcase your skills/credits/extra-curricular activities experiences
Tell the potential employers what you are good at. They may consider you as a competent candidate if you can demonstrate that your skills can help with your work and benefit the company. If you are particularly efficient in handling paperwork, put it into your resume with elaborations. You may want to talk about graphic design awards that you have won if you are applying for relevant jobs. It’s even better if you can show what you did and learnt outside classroom. You may be a member of society committees or councils back in college. Tell employers about those experiences since the nature of duties between committees and posts that you are seeking may resemble.
  2. Talk about your personality
Employers always want to know more about the characters of candidates. Telling them your habits, especially those that are related to the job, is a good way to leave good impression. It is an effective way to let the employers know that you are into what you are about to do, and you are a self-motivated person which many companies desire. If you are a social media dweller who spends lots of time on facebook and other platforms, you may have advantages in applying for jobs related to digital marketing.
